In a recent study, it was revealed that over half of Gen Z (a whopping 53%) view physical cash as a last resort for payments. This generation, known for their tech-savvy ways, finds cold hard cash a bit, well, cringe-worthy.
The Harris Poll surveyed a diverse group of 2080 US adults, delving into their financial habits and preferences. The results? Gen Z consumers are all about modern payment methods like debit cards and phone apps, leaving the old-school cash behind.
But here's where it gets interesting: it's not just about being trendy. Gen Z's aversion to cash is rooted in a desire for financial control. They believe that using apps or cards helps them stick to a budget, and they're right! Research shows that 54% of Gen Zers are more likely to spend impulsively with cash, compared to using a card.
And this is the part most people miss: Gen Z is actually quite financially savvy. Despite their reputation as doom-spenders, 46% of them are building emergency funds and 39% are focused on financial security. They're saving for experiences, big-ticket items, and even milestone missions like moving out.
So, why the cash-free movement? Gen Z wants to avoid debt and build a secure future. As Owen Jennings, head of business at Block Inc., puts it, "It pays to say no to overspending."
This generation is proving that financial independence and responsibility go hand in hand.
